- Robert Smithson’s place as father to Robert Smithson is established in the will of his brother Nicholas’ wife, Ann. Robert Smithson was certainly the father of Nicholas. It is claimed that Robert Smithson married Mary Wilson in Leeds. He was identified as ‘of Snaith’. Mary seems to have been born in Snaith in 1585 although she was identified as ‘of Leeds’ in Paver’s Marriage Licenses for the year 1617. Parish records show her to be ‘base-born’. Robert Smithson and James Smithson (his possible brother) were the earliest Smithsons to be recorded in the parish of Snaith, apart from an unknown Smithson who married Elsabeth Cooke of Heck in 1556. This suggests that the family relocated to Snaith from another parish. It was thought possible that Robert Smithson was born in 1580 in the parish of Normanton. The evidence for this connection is very limited and further research is needed. ↵

- The identification of Robert Smithson as father to Henry Smithson is based on several sources and is predicated by Henry’s descent from Henry Roundell of Leeds. Henry Smithson’s third child (and heir) was Roundell, an uncommon first name, bestowed in celebration of a marriage union with the Roundell family. In an obituary, published in 1820, Henry Smithson’s great grandchild, Thomas Harrison, stated that he ‘was of an ancient and respectable family; so far back as the incorporation of this populous and extensive borough (Leeds), one of his progenitors, Henry Roundell, was numbered amongst its first aldermen’. In his will of 1671-2, Henry Roundell left 2 closes called Dynallcrofts in Balne (near Snaith) to his grandchild, Robert Smythson. Henry also had business dealings with Robert Smithson of Snaith, yeoman, in 1662. He leased to Smithson the close called Marshall and Shaw in Balne, containing 4 acres, to be held for three years from 28 September 1677. This Robert Smithson of Snaith, yeoman, was most probably Henry Roundell’s son-in-law and Snaith parish records show that his son – Roundell’s grandson, Robert Smithson was born in 1655. Which of Henry Roundell’s daughters married Robert is a mystery – she is not mentioned in Roundell’s will (perhaps she was dead by the 1670s). The oldest of Roundell’s known daughters whose marital status is unknown is Edith Roundell, whose year of birth (1631) would make her a likely mother for Robert’s known children born between 1651 and 1655 – Henry Smithson being the first-born. However, as Henry Smithson named his own first-born, a daughter, Ellenor, Robert may have married Ellin Roundel, born 1639. This birth year is late for the mother of many of Robert’s children, but Ellin may have been Robert’s second wife. There was an interval of three years between the birth of Robert’s third child, Mercy, and his fourth child, Robert. Perhaps Robert was Ellin’s first-born, which would explain why he, as Roundell’s grandchild, was remembered in Roundell’s will and Robert’s earlier children were passed over. Robert Smithson senior’s father was, in turn, Robert Smithson. Robert’s birth record has not been found but the will of his brother Nicholas’ wife, Ann, establishes his place in the family. ↵

- Sir Thomas Denison, the younger son of a wealthy merchant of Leeds, was born in 1699. He entered the Inner Temple in 1718. Without filling any of the minor offices of his profession, he was made judge of the king’s bench in 1741. His residence at No. 55, Lincoln’s Inn Fields seems to have begun in 1745, the year which he received the honour of knighthood. After 23 years of judicial duties, he resigned in February, 1765, and died in the following September. ↵

- It is claimed that this William Smithson was the draper of Leeds who made his will, dated 1661 in the 13th year of the reign of King Charles II. This claim is based on the name of his wife, Sarah; the identification of his brother Robert; and the naming of a daughter, Patience, after his sister.
“Will of Wm Smithson of Leeds, Draper, dated 1661, 13 Chas. II. To John S. my eldest son and his heirs the Broadgates, rem”” to Wm S. my 2nd son; for default to Robert S. my 3rd and 4th son, if any; and if not, to right heirs of Wm Smithson. Also Carleton Cross Closes to John Smithson. Also house on Hooke, co. York. To Patience S. my eldest dr. Closes, etc., in the Lordship of Middleton. To Mercy S. my 2nd dr. land in Hunslet; to Sarah my 3rd dr.; to Lidia my 4th dr. Robert Smithson my brother. Sarah my wife. W. pr. 1680.”
This differs from the belief held by George R. Smithson (p.43) that he was descended from ‘William Smithson of Newsham, who was a tenant under William Catherick, Esq., in the reign of Ed. VI., and of Anthony Catherick, Esq., in 28 Eliz’. If any William Smithson of Leeds were descended from this family, it may well be William Smithson of Headrow (or Upper Headrow), clothworker, who had amongst his children a Christopher, a common Christian name amongst the Newsham Smithsons. The existence of two William Smithsons in roughly the same area of Leeds at the same time makes untangling their families from the church records of the time a challenge. All care has been taken in reconstructing this William’s family, variously identified as ‘of Market Place’ or ‘of Headrow’, but caution is still required. ↵

- A good deal of confusion surrounds the birth and baptism dates of this individual. William Smithson senior’s will identifies William as his second (surviving) son. However, there are multiple records of birth and baptisms for a William who could be identified as the draper William Smithson’s son.The first William recorded and transcribed here appears to have died. This entry for William is the second William recorded. Subsequent records are: 7 Feb 1650/51: born – William, son of William Smithson of Market Place (The Registers of the Parish Church of Leeds, p.84); 15 Feb 1650/51: baptised at St Johns – William, son of William Smithson of Market Place (Parish Church of Leeds, p.84). This child William may be the son of William Smithson of Upper Headrow (usual address of the clothworker) who was buried on 13 May 1656 (Parish Church of Leeds, p.389). William is mentioned in a record relating to a Bargain and sale for land in Hook zDDX31/22/103 15 Jul 1672 (These documents are held at East Riding of Yorkshire Archives and Records Service; Former reference: DDX31/354), Contents: Parties: 1) Jane alias Jennett Dunn widow, Sarah Smithson widow, John, William and Robert Smithson drapers all of Leeds 2) Richard Godfrey of Hook yeoman Property: 9 acres land, 2 stangs on Hooke Moors and 1 beastgate in Hooke Pasture Consideration: £120 Witnesses: Henry and Sarah Smithaon, George Briggs, Robart Newmarch, William Gibson, Richard Godfrey, Edward Baley (and others illegible) ↵

- The placement of James Smythson as Robert Smythson’s brother is conjectural but based on the almost simultaneous appearance of these two Smythson’s in the Snaith district (which did not have a history of this family prior to their arrival – see note on brother Robert), Robert’s use of James for one of his children and the close proximity of the brothers – one at Heck and the other at Balne (Bawne). ↵
